Founded in 1177 by Benedictine monks from Lessay in Normandy, the Priory is now the Parish Church. Described as the most important Early English church in Sussex, the church boasts a superb painted ceiling dating from the 1520\'s and a magnificent, free-standing Chantry chapel built for Thomas, Lord de la Warr in 1526. The ruins of the monastic buildings including a Guest House, Chapter House and church of this 12th century priory, which was the cell of a French abbey until Richard II confirmed its independence in 1383.
