The point where the Forth and Clyde Canal of 38 miles crosses the narrowest part of Scotland, built by Smeaton in 1790, enters the Clyde.
In the background are the Kilpatrick Hills rising to 1,313ft.
The first practical steamboat was Symington’s ‘Charlotte Dundas’ was trialled here in 1802. In 1812 Bell launched the famous ‘Comet’, the first Clyde passenger steamer.
