The village huddles in a valley beneath its 12th century castle and next to the church a Norman keep completed in 1187.
There are remains of a former Roman station of Lavatrae.
To the west is the Roman Camp of Rey Cross, with the remains of the well known Cross described in Scott’s ‘Rokeby’.
