Bourton-on-the-Water Six-a-Side Football

Bank holiday Monday in August.  Six-a-side medieval football played to FA rules in the River Windrush. Goal posts are set up in the river and a riotous games ensues playing fifteen minutes each way. Two teams play with a standard football, and a referee attempts to keep order. Crowds line the banks of the river, and the aim is to score as many goals as possible (while getting everyone else as wet as possible)
