In 1679 the Battle of Bothwell Brig was fought here ending in the defeat of the Covenanters.
The 1200 or so prisoners were confined for 5 months in the Greyfriars Churchyard at Edinburgh.
The original bridge over the Clyde dates from 1400 but was modernised in 1826.
Sir Walter Scott wrote ‘Young Lochinvar at Bothwell.
The Collegiate Church dates partly from 1398 and contains some fine 18th monuments to the Douglas family.
