The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the name is that the word ‘bore’ in Saxon meant market.
The church is of Saxon origin and some Saxon work still remains. It has a Norman tower and is unique in Essex as it the only church with a central tower. The tower is Norman but after the first 15 feet there is an arch which is made of Roman brick.
Boreham House, built by James Gibbs for Benjamin Hoare in 1728. The wings of the house were added in 1812.
New Hall, rebuilt by Henry VIII in 1520 is now a convent, has one of the finest avenue of lime trees in the country. The bay windows are magnificent and topped by a plain parapet.
