Another old village, complete with a superb duck pond and nearby are the solid and respectable Victorian villas where Charles Dickens; William Makepeace Thackeray and Thomas Macaulay stayed during their visits.
The old Church of St Boniface is Norman and built on the site of an 8th century Anglo-Saxon structure, and is recorded in the Domesday Book. Not far from the church is the site of a Roman Camp.
