The castle was built in the 14th century by Richard Scrope, Lord Chancellor of England as a fortified manor.
Its massive walls and towers jutting four-square above the hills and where Mary, Queen of Scots, spent six unhappy months in prison in 1568.
Local legend has it that while trying to escape she dropped here shawl, and is said to be the origin of the Leyburn Shawl.
