Bolsover - Church of St Mary and St Lawrence

Church St, Bolsover S44 6HB, England

URPoint Details

The church of St Mary and St Lawrence is described as an outstanding building.
Partly destroyed by fire in 1897, was rebuilt to Ambler's designs, although the 12th century tower and spire remain intact. The spire is one of only two remaining examples in Britain.
The Cavendish Chapel which was added as a private mortuary in 1618, houses two superbly ornate monuments. One monument to Charles Cavendish, who built Bolsover Castle, shows him with his wife and family. The other is a vast marble monument with Corinthian columns and a black sarcophagus dedicated to the other members of the Cavendish family.
The interior has been superbly decorated in a modern style, since 1960 when the church was again partly destroyed by fire.
The church has eight bells and local bell ringers are active and practice each week.
