Famous area for the steam era and it was here in 1764 that James Watt developed his condensing steam engine working from a cottage on the country estate of Kinneil House.

The famous Antonine Wall which can be seen from Bearsden, Glasgow and ends here in Bo’ness. It was probably abandoned around 163AD. Remains are best preserved in the Falkirk/Bonnybridge area. The eastern of the Antonine Wall, a Roman fortification, lay here and one slab was unearthed in 1868. 

The full name of the town is Borrowstouness and was an important port in the 19th century.

Kinneil House which dates from the 16th century has good ceilings and wall decorations.
