Three miles of white sand and wooded parkland stretches south of the harbour attracts many holidaymakers each year.
In the 19th century ship-building and coal-carrying made the town prosperous. Although these industries have declined, the harbour is a haven for yachts and fishermen.
Blyth Lighthouse stands behind a row of houses on the waterfront and is still used.
