The Romans came to Castleton and discovered Blue John, the largest range of natural waterworn caves, containing eight of the 14 known veins. A rare and semi-precious stone, is still mined in Blue John Cavern.
Much later, lead miners found another source in Treak Cliff cavern - an underground world of magic and mystery with its Fossil Cave, Aladdin's cave and the Dream cave.
