Car park; toilets and shop. Disabled car park; disabled visitors may be set down closer to the castle. Display boards around the lawn, although wheelchair users will find access to the castle extremely difficult due to very uneven ground and cobbles.
Paths around the lawn are gravel and there is some fine shrubbery in the grounds. Visitors can enjoy spectacular views across to the Fife coast and Forth Bridges.
One of Scotland's most important strongholds built in the 14th century and strengthened in the 16th century as an artillery fortress.
It has been royal castle, prison, armaments depot, film location for Hamlet and the BBC production of Ivanhoe.
