URPoint Details
The manor of Cannings was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as held by the Bishop of Salisbury.
Thatched cottages lie in the shadow of St Mary’s church which was built on the Bishop of Salisbury’s estate in the 13th century.
To the northeast, along the crest of the downs, runs the ancient Wansdyke with small tumuli and earthworks.
The Church of St Mary the Virgin has a curious confessional chair on which an enormous hand is painted with a number of gloomy Latin inscriptions about death and sin, such as ‘The hour of death is uncertain’.
Originating in the 12th or 13th century, and is Grade I listed with many Early English features surviving, it was altered in the 14th and 15th centuries and restored in the 19th.
