A fascinating and ancient market town on the River Stort with many fine 16th and 17th century buildings as well as the remains of a Norman castle.
There are three delightfully olde pubs dating from the 16th & 17th century. ‘The Black Lion’ in Devils Lane dates from the 16th century and is a timbered pub with the Black Lion emblem of Queen Phillipa. ‘The Boar's Head’ is a delightful pastel coloured timbered 15th century building with lots of charm. ‘The George’ in the High St dates from the 1400's and remodelled in the 17th and 19th centuries.
Cecil John Rhodes, founder of Rhodesia was born here in 1853 and died in 1902. he founded Rhodesia in 1889.
