Surrounded by green Lowland hills, Birkhill which stands at the 1,105ft high summit of the Birkhill Pass is overshadowed by White Coomb rising to 2,695ft almost on the Selkirk border.
Southwest is the well known waterfall of the Grey Mare's Tail dropping 200ft, where the Tail Burn joins the Moffat Water with the wild Loch of Skene nearby in its lonely setting under Lochcraig Head at 2,625ft.
