The Priory Church of St Mary and the Holy Cross, (EH)
Remains of a Benedictine centre founded in 1100, is still an impressive sight. The 13th century west front has the remains of an early tracery window, and the Norman nave now forms part of the parish church.
St Mary’s Church has a magnificent Early English west front and built before 1244. Even with its great window bricked up it is a remarkable composition of arches and columns compliment the sturdy Norman work of the nave. Three tiers of semi-circular arches line each side and of the original nine bays seven still stand. The seven-sacrament font is built on steps.
