The town is spread out along its main street supposedly the widest in Scotland and lies in the broad vale of Biggar Water, a tributary of the River Tweed, whose waters reach the Clyde The church of St Mary dates from the 16th century and was the last church to be built before the Reformation. In the churchyard are the graves of the Gladstone family, relatives of the 19th century Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.
