The village is named after a Norman family whose coat of arms is in the porch of the parish church complete with a good screen.
Near the church is Berry House and a tithe barn dating from the 16th century.
Berry Pomeroy Castle remains are set in a wooded valley, the tower dares from the 14th century when the castle was built by the Pomeroys and in the 16th century the Seymours took possession and spent a fortune restoring the ruined stronghold around the courtyard.
