It was here that William the Conqueror accepted the English throne from the Saxons.

The town is set on top of a hill where little remains of the castle except the motte and bailey and a unique double moat.

The elegant High Street runs parallel with the River Bulbourne with lovely buildings including the 16th century Court house, shops and a ruined 15th century castle.

Incents House is one the finest building in the town and is a half-timbered 16th century building with an overhanging upper storey.

There are four pubs of note including the red-brick King’s Arms, plastered and gabled Bell Inn and the Swan Inn of the 17th century.

William Cowper the hymn writer was born here

The 13th century church of St Peter is part Norman.
