This small market town once had an iron industry, but is now a tourist destination for walkers in particular.
A track to the north follows Hareshaw Burn to the foot of a waterfall at Hareshaw Linn.
The Pennine Way can be joined here.
St Cuthbert’s Well, reached by a path behind the churchyard is said to have healing powers.
