This scientific nursery, museum of trees and delightful parkland is an offshoot of Kew Gardens.
The area was founded in 1924 to grow experimentally various types of foreign plants, chiefly conifers which did not thrive in the smoggy London air.
The 75 acre Pinetum contains a wide variety of pines and firs besides cypresses, cedars, larches, hemlock spruce and Californian redwoods. Broad leaved trees include oak and birch.
There are many kinds of fantastic shrubs including rhododendrons which line much of the winding road from the village.
There are three lakes fed by a small streams and covered in water lilies.
