A wide cobbled pavement gives the market square width to the town’s main street, where a market has been held since the 13th century, and old houses in brick and whitewash line the street.
The parish church is mainly 13th and 14th century with interesting monuments, vaulted crypt and tower arch and is one of the finest in North Riding.
