Most of the old town was destroyed by fire in both the 16th and 17th century.
Georgian houses of red-brick make this a very lovely and distinctive town on the River Waveney.
West of the Old Market is St Peter's House which is Georgian and has an original Gothic fireplace.
Roos Hall is mostly gabled and dates from 1583, once the home of Sir John Suckling an ancestor of Lord Nelson.
During summer the staithe (quay) by the river is always busy with vessels of all type moored here.
On the town sign it shows Queen Elizabeth I presenting the town charter to the portreeve.
