Beatrix Potter was born in 1866 and lived at Hill Top Farm, behind the Town Bank Arms in the early 1900’s.
She married a Westmorland solicitor, William Heelis. When she died in 1943 she bequeathed her house and much of the surrounding land she owned to the National Trust.
