URPoint Details
It is to this spot at the Church of St Mary and St Walston that pilgrims have come since 1016, from far and wide, to worship the burial place of St Walston, patron saint of agriculture and farm workers. Once a year parishioners pay homage to this 11th century saint in the round tower church of St Mary and St Walston, followed by a procession down to the well, the traditional drawing of the curative waters from the well, the final resting place of Walston’s oxen and cart. A ploughman’s lunch follows, usually held in the grounds of the historic Church Farmhouse. It is said that however much the farmers need rain, it never comes until after two o’clock!
