A town reached by a moorland road from Stornoway on the west coast of the island near the head of Loch Barvas, and which passes countless lochans and overlooked by Ben Barvas (918ft).
At Shader is the site of the Thrushel Stone, a tall prehistoric monolith.
From Swanibost there is a view of the Eye of the Needle, a wild cape of rock pinnacles and cliffs near the Butt of Lewis.
