A town developed in the 19th century around submarine building on a peninsula jutting into Morcambe Bay.
There are some fine sandy beaches and a nature reserve on Walney Island which is connected to Barrow by a bridge.
St James Church, has one of the best steeples in the county, and a highly unusual interior from the 1860's, in the style of the 13th century.
