An ancient estate, held by the Daubeney family before 1240, which passed through several hands, via the Duke of Suffolk to William Clifton, a prosperous London merchant, who was probably responsible for building the house in 1550.
In 1907, neglected and dilapidated, Barrington was the first country house to be acquired by the National Trust, although the Trust was unable to find the funds necessary for its repair.
In 1920 it was let to Colonel A A Lyle, who restored the house and filled it with his own interior fittings.
It is a gabled E-plan house of Ham stone original entrance facade to the south consists of 2 long projecting wings enclosing a forecourt and topped with a riot of finials and spiral chimney.
Apart from 2 overmantels (one showing the Judgement of Solomon), little original decoration survives. Lyle's introductions include a fine collection of oak panelling.
A beautiful garden laid out in a series of rooms, including the White Garden, the Rose and Iris garden and the Lily Garden. The best example of Gertrude Jekyll within the National Trust's care. The working kitchen garden has apple, pear & plum
