Barnwell Manor, a Tudor house of great distinction lies within the shadow of its own medieval castle, built by Berengar le Moine in 1266. Two small vaulted rooms are all that remain intact, but each tower shows evidence of the layout of the rooms once occupied by medieval knights.
Northamptonshire legend has it that Berengar concealed the body of his brother Wintner within the 12 ft thick walls.
Sir Edward Montagu built the Manor in 1568 after a gift of the land to his grandfather by King Henry VIII.
King Charles I stayed at Barnwell Manor in August 1645 and besides our present Royal Family, other notables such as Sir Philip Sydney, the Dukes of Buccleuch, Earls of Sandwich and the poet, John Dryden have all once lived or stayed at Barnwell.
In 1938, His Royal Highness, Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester, younger brother to Edward VIII and George VI bought Barnwell Manor.
The Manor has exceptional gardens of approximately eight acres.
