The castle on a cliff above the River Tees was rebuilt in 1112 by Edward Baliol and has a 14th century round keep.
Blagroves House is Elizabethan, the Town Hall dates from 1747 and it is said that Dickens wrote ‘Nicholas Nickleby’ at the King's Head Inn.
