Built in 1580 and designed by Robert Smythson for John Saville the agent to Sir Francis Rhodes, of Barlborough Hall.
The building consists of two storeys with two projecting gabled wings at the front and two other wings at the rear which are of six bays, with five bay returns.
The interior has four overmantels, the most interesting one commemorating the visit by Charles I visit to Welbeck Abbey in 1633.
The house, which passed to the Rhodes family early in the next century, had been sold by 1723. It was renamed Crosshouses, and by the 1970's had fallen into decay, having lost it's name to now identified by no. 2-8 Church Street.
In 1980 it was acquired by the Derbyshire Historic Trust and restoration work began. In 1995 it was purchased by a private owner and is being restored.
