A delightful village with a fine little church near the River Cree.
A road northeast, leads to Loch Trool in Glen Trool with the National Forest Park, one of the most beautiful places in Galloway.
Beyond rises the Merrick to 2,274ft to highest mountain in the Lowlands and farther east is Corserine rising to 2,668ft.
West of the village are the three small lochs of Ochiltree, Dornal and Maberry.
On the narrow and winding moorland road north of the village on the way to Maybole is the lonely ‘Nick o’the Balloch Pass’ at 1,280ft in a fine hilly setting east to Shalloch on Minnoch at 2,520ft beyond which is the remote Loch Macaterick.
Before the pass is reached the road crosses into Ayrshire with Loch Moan to the west and to the east is Mullwharchar rising to 2,270ft.
