The best way to reach the site is to follow the Ridgeway, an ancient track.
Sometimes called Barbury Castle originally built as a hill-fort of about 12 acres, encircled by two ditches and a rampart. There have been several finds here including jewellery, coins and arrowheads dating from the 3rd and 2nd century BC.
Centuries later the West Saxons supposedly beat the Britons at the Battle of Beran Byrig in AD556.
