Famous for its cattle market, cakes and nursery rhyme (Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross). The Cross, standing in the centre of the town was erected in 1859. Banbury cakes are spicy, and date back to the 16th century.
The town was founded in Saxon times, it has some fine houses and interesting old inns and is a good centre for touring Warwickshire and the Cotswolds.
Jonathan Swift of the 'Gullivers Travels' fame is supposed to have taken the name for his book from a grave in the churchyard.
The 'Reindeer Inn', in Parson St. is half-timbered and gabled.
