Little grey houses face each other across a wide green and where each evening a hunting horn is still blown which dates back more than 700 years.
The River Bain flows down to the town from Semer Water lying in the moors nearly two miles south and is nearly a mile long by half a mile wide, the largest natural lake in the dales.
