An attractive resort with excellent beaches and fishing harbour, but is probably more famous for its most famous son, Robert Burns who was born at Alloway, 2 miles south.
A royal burgh since 1202 has a rich history as it was here that Wallace started the the War of Independence.
Bruce held a parliament here in 1315 to determine the Scottish succession.
Cromwell built his great fort above the harbour and he used the Church of St John to store his weapons.
The Auld Kirk dates from 1655 with Cromwellian associations and it was here that Burns was baptised.
