Aylesbury - Church of St Mary the Virgin
St Mary's Square, Aylesbury HP20 2JJ, England
URPoint Details
The church is Early English, and has been extensively restored in the 19th century. The lead spire is eye catching addition to the large, cruciform building, approached through Georgian Church St. The font is of beautiful Norman work wide bowl on a square base, decorated with scrolls and leaves (known in the county as 'Aylesbury fonts'). The 15th century oak vestment press is of great interest. Also an Elizabethan monument to Lady Lee in which she kneels, her daughter behind, and between them two babies in swaddling clothes to show that they were infant mortalities. There is also a rare Victorian brass of one Frances Squibbs.
