URPoint Details
With its soaring spire, the Church of St John the Baptist, (Churches Conservation Trust) is in a glorious setting on a steep hillside above a pretty village, this church is a masterpiece of the Gothic Revival. Charles Buckeridge built it in golden Hornton ironstone in 1869 to replace a medieval church, whose east window her re-set in the west wall of the tower. The interior is as detailed and well proportioned as the exterior and the fittings, mostly by Buckeridge, are excellent. A recess in the chancel contains a remarkable early medieval effigy of a deacon.
