Avington , England

URPoint Details

A village in the Itchen Valley, where the river fans out to make a lake behind the imposing mansion of Avington House where Nell Gwynne lived when Charles II was staying at Winchester.

Beside the park is the elegant 18th Church of St Mark and St Luke built by Margaret, Marchioness of Carnarvon.
A church of rare charm is found, sheltered beneath a huge cedar tree, and is almost completely Norman and its treasures include a fine chancel arch with beak head ornament, a south door with zig zag carving and a Norman font exquisitely carved with a procession of 13 figures including two bishops, three devils and one beheaded saint.
There is no tower, no aisles and nearly all the windows are original.
