A regularly altered house of monastic origin, the present buildings date from the early Elizabethan, with notable Queen Anne alterations and Edwardian renovation by Colonel Jenner.
When there is a full moon, it is said that small figures dance among the stones re-enacting their pagan rituals.
The house is supposedly haunted by a White Lady, said to be forever grieving for her lover killed in the Civil War.
The topiary and flower gardens contain medieval walls, ancient box and numerous compartments.
