Once a royal burgh, the little town stands on the edge of the Howe of Fife looking northwest to the Ochil hills.
On the road to Perth is the Thirlstane, a stone block once used for the beam holding the wool-scales.
The old Tolbooth dates from 1728 and there are some rare thatched roof houses, most unusual for Scotland.
