Aston Cantlow

Aston Cantlow , England

URPoint Details

The Norman family of de Cantelupe acquired the manor in 1205, when it was known as Estone and gave the village its name. They built a castle on the banks of the River Alne, but fell into ruins two centuries later.

The 12th century Church of St John the Baptist dates mainly from the 13th century and is believed to be where William Shakespeare’s parents were married in 1557.

The Victorian architect William Butterfield designed the pretty cottages, vicarage, school and master’ house near the church and the rest of the village has black and white timbered houses.
