When Canute decided to bring his fight for the kingdom with Edmund Ironside to an all out battle, he found that the countryside here on the Crouch river very flat. The battle commenced and quickly a foothold was established on a hill about a mile from the river, the date was 1016. In 1020, Canute came back and consecrated a stone church and dedicated it to the souls of the slain.
