URPoint Details
The name means ‘ashy leas or hill of ashes’, and is very old settlement and evidence of Roman encampment has been found.
In 1874 a gold torque was found and a quantity of pottery in the area known as Quidney.
The two manors were known as Uphall and Panworth, both prosperous farms, and the Bedingfield family were lords of the manor from 1554 to 1682.
