URPoint Details
There is a sloping roadway of approx. 500 m. from main entrance to gardens. Lifts to all floors make this a friendly accessible site for disabled visitors.
The castle was built by Roger Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury just after the Conquest in 1066 to defend the valley against raiders. It was added to in 1170 and 1190 and was almost ruined in 1643 by Oliver Cromwell when he fired a canon from the steeple of the church of St Nicholas.
The castle was rebuilt in the 18th century and much restored during the 19th century.
