Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington was born in Dublin on 29 April, 1769.
He started his distinguished military career in the 73rd Regiment of Foot, then transferred to the 41st regiment in Ireland, where he eventually took command of the 33rd Foot.
As a colonel in 1794 he lead his battalion against the French in Holland. 1797, and on his return from India to England in 1805 was made Major-General Sir Arthur Wellesley, victor of the Battle of Assaye, and Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath.
After the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1806, Sir Arthur became Chief Secretary for Ireland, in 1807.
In 1808 as Lieutenant-General Wellesley, he was involved with driving the French out of Portugal. For the next few years after becoming Lord Wellington, he led his troops in many battles and was awarded the Order of the Garter for his efforts.
It was after defeating Napoleopn and the French troops that Wellington was made a Duke.
He died in 1852.
