Arthur Griffith, born in Dublin, March 31, 1872. Founded the weekly United Irishman in 1899 and wrote many editorials. In 1902 he founded a group which later became the nucleus of Sinn Fein. Although imprisoned in 1916, released in 1917 and again imprisoned in 1918, he was not actively involved in the Easter Uprising of 1916.
He was elected vice-president of the Irish Republic. He died on 12 August 1922.
