Built about 1490 by the McLeods, who in the mid 13th century obtained Assynt by marriage and the three storied ruins stand on its shores.
After his defeat at Culrain, near Bonar Bridge, in 1650 the Marquess of Montrose fled to Assynt but was soon captured and confined here before being sent to Edinburgh and executed.
