St Brendan founded a monastery here in the 6th century. The cathedral dates from the 12th to 17th centuries, has a fine Romanesque west doorway, a magnificent 13th century east window, the south wall boasts a row of nine lancets which is quite spectacular and there are some interesting effigies. The site also has three medieval churches, an ogham stone and a number of grave slabs. One of the two smaller churches is late Romanesque whilst another is a plain 15th century building but with an interesting carving on one of the windows.
